Trigger Points & Massage
What are they?
Trigger points are irritated spots in a
muscle or fascia that relates to specific and/or radiating pain,
decreased range of motion, weakening of the muscle and autonomic
phenomena (example: massaging the forearm causes the fingers to move
unintentionally).
What causes them?
They are caused by muscle overload, overuse and overextension.
What is the treatment?
Removing them involves applying very deep
pressure repeatedly and then stretching the area out. The experience is
often physically painful, but after the session clients often feel much
less tension in the area and notice a greater range of motion.
The use of ice during the treatment can
reduce the pain while pressure is being applied and can make the
treatment more effective.
Treatment is typically part of a circulatory massage or deep tissue massage.
