Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage it a technique with a very light rhythmic touch of non-gliding strokes that is intended to clear the lymphatic system and move the fluids back toward the body center.

I'm a strong believer that a light touch can sometimes be more powerful and healing than a deeper touch. The body knows how to heal itself... it just needs a gentle presence to activate that knowing.

That it why I love lymphatic massage.

This technique is often performed as part of a detoxifing program and is also really great for people who just had surgery because it strengthens the immune system.

The lymphatic system is in charge of defending the body against infection and disease. When the lymphatic system becomes clogged from excessive toxins, this form of massage helps to clear or "drain" the lymph.

Lymphatic massage (also called "lymphatic drainage") gently urges the fluids from the swollen areas back towards the torso. It is often used with clients that have edema (swelling in the extremities).

Gliding strokes such as effleurage (with gentle pressure) do not officially fall under this catagory, but can also be used with a similar intent.

I find this gentle massage to also be wonderful for relaxation, and can reduce anxiety, increase intestinal activity, and is very de-stressing.

If you are considering this type of massage for medical reasons, such as post-surgery recovery or edema caused by infection, check with your doctor before requesting a massage. Sometimes the body increases fluids in an area as a way of healing the area and it is important that the fluids not be disturbed. Therefore, check with your doctor first.
