Lemon Essential Oil
I don't use lemon essential oil in my massage blends. Even blended, the
oil can be quite caustic and it is also "phototoxic" which means that
if one goes in the sun after applying this oil, it will create a darker
pigment. This is true for 3-4 days after the application, even if the
wearer has showered since applying the oil.
Not a good idea to use in massage. Imagine
someone showing up 4 days after a massage complaining that they have
this weird tan and that they think it was from the oil I used. That
would be so bazaar.
Lemon essential oil, however, is excellent
for household cleaning and I use it everywhere, especially in the
bathroom and kitchen.
It's non-toxic, but it is anti-bacterial,
anti-fungal, and antiseptic and really great for removing stains. For
example, I mix about 30 drops with a box of baking soda, pour some of
the baking soda around the drain of my sink, and use a toothbrush to
remove the rust around the drain. It always comes out looking great!
But I digress, from an aromatherapy point
of view, lemon essential oil will refresh and individual and wake them
up, so it's to take a bottle to work and take a whiff when you need it.
Or place a few drops in a burner if that is permitted.
Adding the lemon essential oil to a burner
will disinfect the air, as will adding a drop or so to an atomizer and
spraying the air. This use is perfect for office areas that tend to
have minimal air circulation. If sprayed in the room of a sick person,
it will disinfect the room and encourage the immune system.
Lemon essential oil can also be kept in the
first aid kit to clean cuts but, again, be sure to not expose the oil
to the sun for several days after applying it to your skin.
It has also been said to be good for
circulation, cellulite, acne and oily skin, but as mentioned earlier, I
prefer to not use it for day to day skin care so I have not confirmed
these statements.
