Finger Tips - Massage Newsletter, Issue #008 -- "Am I Sleeping Wrong?"
August 14, 2007
GREETINGS!

I just switched the bed I sleep in and the way I sleep in it, and by doing so I have made a tremendous sdifference in how I feel during the day.

I am infinitely more relaxed and I am actually able to be more active during the day.

The shift has been so huge for me that it has inspired me to write about the "right" way to lie in bed.

This position I am about to describe was taught to me in massage school, and I am passing it on to you.

I did it for over three years and then stopped about a year ago for no apparent reason.

A few weeks ago, I went back to this "proper sleep position" and I am so happy that I did (and so is my body).

With gratitude,

Leslie

MASSAGE FINGER TIP:
How to Sleep "Right"

Lately, I've been getting a lot of people coming for massage work because they "slept wrong".

Many say, "The right side of my neck has been feeling tight since this morning... Must have slept wrong!"

I don't think there is really a way to "sleep right", but there is a way to sleep that will encourage you not to wake up with kinks in your neck or lower back, or additional tension in your body.

This position will take most people some getting used to, and you may not maintain it throughout the night when you first start, but eventually you will find that if you lie yourself down at night in this position, you will wake in the same position.

And you will feel sooooo much better when you wake up!

All you have to do is lie flat on your back. That's it. And use a pillow, but not under your head. The pillow should go under your knees.

Most of the time, a pillow is either too low (if you sleep on your side) or too high (if you sleep on your side or back) and it places the head and neck out of proper position. This is why so many people wake up with kinks in their neck.

By placing the pillow under the knee, it shortens the hamstrings (the muscles on the back of the leg). Most people have tight hamstrings which can affect a sleeper by making the lower back feel tight upon waking.

It's not mandatory that the pillow goes under the knees, but most people find it is more comfortable than having no pillow.

Additionally, if you do end up rolling to your side in the middle of the night, you can move the pillow between your knees which will allow you to lie in bed with your hips properly aligned.

Sweet Dreams!
